Love, Victory Junction Style

February is the month of love, and love is always in the air at Victory Junction! We often talk about the long-term benefits of Camp, especially the connections and lasting friendships made with others. But, did you know that sometimes those Camp connections can lead to love? That was the case for Trey and Amber White, so during this month of love we’d like to share their story.

Red hearts

It all began several years ago when Amber messaged Trey on Facebook, after seeing that he was working at VJ on summer staff. They talked for a while and discovered that their paths had crossed before – more than once! Amber and Trey both had been campers at Victory Junction during Camp’s first two summers in operation, even attending the same camp sessions. They also realized that they both had undergone chemotherapy at Duke during the same time period. Trey even remembered seeing Amber there.

After texting for about two weeks, Amber and Trey agreed to meet at a restaurant in Durham, NC for their first date. After they bonded over complimentary bread, the rest was history, and they have been together since!

Today, Trey works for the State Employees Credit Union, and Amber is a kindergarten teacher, and she is also completing her master’s degree to become a librarian. In their free time, they like to play games, travel, watch movies and tv together, and play with their dog, Khloe.

Amber and Trey agree that Victory Junction has had a great impact on their lives. “I learned to never judge a book by its cover and to be kind to everyone,” Trey said. “Camp taught me empathy and compassion towards others,” Amber added. “This helps me to be a better teacher and friend.”

As for the future, Amber and Trey plan to give back to the place that gave them so much. They want to return to Victory Junction and volunteer together, looking to create new Camp memories and inspire others to make a difference for all the kids yet to come.
