Many people don’t truly know how much goes into being a counselor at Victory Junction. Long days, a great deal of rigorous activity, and making sure each child is safe and enjoying their time, are only a few of the components that make up a week at camp. The counselors are always on the go but always have unending energy to ensure that campers get the best possible experience at Victory Junction.
Upcoming sophomore at UNC-Wilmington and Raleigh native, Summer Warner, is a first time counselor this summer. After finding out about Victory Junction through her sister-in-law who was also involved with camp, Summer became interested in getting involved herself.
Summer has always enjoyed helping children of different abilities and spending time with them. She volunteered for a program that was part of her high school’s special education department, Circle of Friends. She attended different events such as the Special Olympics and helped children with various activities while cheering them on. Summer is a great addition to the Victory Junction family, and the campers love her.
Going to the waterpark with her campers and dancing at the dance parties that take place after breakfast and dinner are some things Summer really enjoys. Although Summer truly enjoys the waterpark and dance parties, she said her favorite thing about camp is watching the kids overcome their fears and open up.
Summer has not only bonded with her campers, she also has made countless friendships with fellow counselors. They hang out with each other outside of camp and have become really close over the course of the summer. The friendships they have made create a close-knit community that is felt throughout camp.
Friendships, laughter, smiles, and an all around positive attitude is what makes up the Victory Junction environment, and it’s due to counselors like Summer.
We appreciate all of Summer’s efforts and the time she has put into camp. Thank you, Summer!
