All Fun and No Sun

For children living with porphyria, a rare condition that can make even brief sun exposure painful or dangerous, summer fun often feels out of reach. But at Victory Junction’s Sun Escape Weekend campers, Lila and Morgan are finally free to be kids – safely and fully.

Created in partnership with Shadow Jumpers and The United Porphyrias Association, Sun Escape reimagines the traditional camp experience with innovative adaptations. Campers enjoy night ziplining, campfires, fishing, and more, and during the day they are protected by UV-blocking structures, climate-controlled cabins, and carefully designed schedules.

Watch Lila and Morgan’s Story here.

“Every activity we’ve been doing here at Victory Junction has been 100% UV safe,” shared parent Andrew Murphy, whose daughter Lila attended. “She’s been able to participate in every activity.”

For Morgan, another Sun Escape camper, the experience goes beyond fun and safety – it’s about connection.

“To Victory Junction, I would like to just say thank you. Without you, I would not be here and wouldn’t see my friends as much as I do. These kids who may have it a little worse are finally able to experience pure happiness and meet new people just like them. I’m so forever grateful.”

At Victory Junction, the sun doesn’t define the day – joy, freedom, and belonging do. For families impacted by porphyria, Sun Escape Weekend isn’t just a program. It’s a powerful reminder that every child deserves the thrill of adventure and the warmth of community.
