The “Magic of Camp” is Fueled by Selflessness

“Hi, I’m Amy McDowell, Director of Medical Operations at Victory Junction.”
Her greeting comes with an easy smile and an energy that fills every program area of Camp. A registered nurse with a doctorate in nursing practice, you’d never know her educational pedigree unless she gave you a business card. That’s because Amy leads with her heart in a place where medical care and childhood adventure are around every turn.
Ask Amy what fuels her day-to-day and her answer is simple: the campers. She loves watching quiet children break into giggles, seeing kids who use wheelchairs spin into graceful dance moves, and hearing the roar of friends cheering one another on at the climbing tower. “There’s nothing like seeing a child thrive, not just survive,” she says.
Watch Amy’s Story here.
Amy describes the Victory Junction medical team with one word: selfless. Whether it’s a new graduate who brings fresh enthusiasm, or a nurse in their seventies who offers seasoned wisdom, Amy says they’re always at Camp for the right reasons. Together they create a haven where children with complex medical and physical needs feel safe and limitless.
For many campers, thoughts of Victory Junction stir up a mix of butterflies and excitement. But the moment they enter the gates, routines fade, friendships grow, and dreams take flight. People often call it “camp magic,” however, Amy reminds us that the real magic comes from an entire village of caring hearts who want to be a part of something bigger.
